It's Never Too Late to Quit Smoking

People who have been smoking their whole lives may think that there's no point in quitting smoking. Even if they understand the harm that smoking causes, many believe that the harm is already done and stopping now wouldn't make that much of a difference. However, a recent study has revealed that this line of thinking is wrong - it's never too late to quit smoking.

By now, almost everyone knows about the health risks involved with smoking - the worst being various forms of cancer that can cut your life short. However, research collected by the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study recently published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine shows that older adults who quit smoking even when they're in their 60's have less of a chance of dying in the following years than people in their 60's who continue to smoke.

The study included more than 160,000 people older than 70. The study began in 2004, and required participants to complete questionnaires concerning their smoking history. They were then tracked all the way through 2011.

According to the data, around 12% of those who never smoked passed away, compared to 33% of those who did smoke. The data showed that the earlier people quit, the better. Around 16% of people who quit in their 30's passed during the study period, whereas 28% of those in their 60s who quit died.
