Transportation Services: For Those Who Can't Drive

If you’ve ever acted in a caregiver capacity for a family member or loved one, you know how much of a barrier transportation can be for individuals who are elderly or have disabilities—and how difficult it can be to try to take on that responsibility yourself. One 2018 survey conducted by the National Aging and Disability Transportation Center found that around 40% of caregivers spend at least 5 hours per week providing or arranging transportation for their loved ones.

It’s a difficult balance to strike. Providing transportation can considerably strain caregivers, many of whom have jobs or other responsibilities or may already be experiencing caregiver burnout. And yet, for elderly or disabled individuals, transportation is essential for going to doctors’ appointments and running errands. Aside from these basic needs, lack of access to transportation can result in isolation, which can have severe consequences for mental health and quality of life.

FSL Is Bringing Peace of Mind to Caregivers

Many of FSL’s clients and their caregivers are in this situation. To alleviate caregiver burden and increase accessibility for our clients, FSL offers door-to-door transportation for members of our recreation centers. The benefits of this are twofold. First, our transportation services give caregivers more time in their day. Nowadays, driving back and forth can take up to two hours a day in traffic! Second, our shuttles provide members with a sense of independence that they might not have otherwise, as well as an opportunity to interact and bond with their peers in the program.

How It Works

Arrangements for FSL’s transportation services can be made on enrollment or can be added later if necessary. Each center’s transportation services operate within a certain distance radius, so check with your FSL location to see if you fall within the locations they can accommodate.

Clients enrolled in FSL’s transportation services are picked up at a specific time each day. Each route is operated by the same professionally trained driver every day. In addition to creating a more consistent, comfortable experience for clients, this allows them to build a relationship with their driver and for their driver to act as a member of that individual’s care team.
