In the heart of Tempe, Arizona, a dedicated leader named Carolyn Hutchens has been making significant waves in the community through her exceptional work at FSL’s Adult Day Health Center. With unwavering commitment and a passion for inclusivity, Carolyn has been the driving force behind positive change in Tempe. In this post, we’ll explore how Carolyn’s volunteer activities and humanitarian efforts have created a lasting impact on the Tempe community while delving into her leadership qualities, inspiration as a role model, long-term commitment, and well-deserved recognitions.
Making Tempe a Healthy and Happy Place to Age
Carolyn’s journey began in 1998 when she joined FSL ReCreación, an adult day health program catering to individuals with various physical, cognitive, and developmental disabilities or medical conditions. As the Director of ReCreación since 2000, Carolyn has relentlessly worked to establish a welcoming and inclusive environment for all Tempe families. This program impacts hundreds of Arizona families each year, offering a safe, fun place for individuals in need, and respite hours for their family caregivers.
Her commitment to creativity in programming has resulted in an environment where individuals thrive through meaningful activities throughout the day. Carolyn’s passion for serving the aging population is evident in her words: “The population that gets the most overlooked and underappreciated is our seniors… They built everything we have today, and they’re often not appreciated in society.”
A Leader in Quality Care
Carolyn serves as a positive role model to a team of incredible direct care workers and nurses through her compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to helping those in need. Her genuine care and respect for individuals with disabilities have left a lasting impression on both her colleagues and the people she serves. Carolyn’s approachability and willingness to go above and beyond her duties have inspired others to follow her lead.
For over two decades, Carolyn has been dedicated to improving healthy aging in Arizona. She actively engages in various volunteer activities, such as coordinating the Tempe Festival of the Arts Fundraiser, raising valuable funds for FSL and its programs. Carolyn’s dedication extends to representing Tempe programs on the Arizona Association of Adult Day Health Services and serving as its president from 2004 to 2006.
Carolyn’s tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed. She has received several acknowledgements individually and on behalf of the Tempe Center, including the City of Tempe Honorable Mention, Tempe Beautification Award, AT Still University West Valley Crystal Award, and the Mayor’s Disability Awards Tempe Community Service Award. These accolades reflect her exceptional dedication and service to the community.

A Personal Touch: Bridging Generations
One of Carolyn’s most remarkable attributes is her commitment to bridging generational gaps. She involves her children in the ReCreación program, instilling values of empathy and respect from an early age. This simple act has had a profound impact, breaking down stereotypes and fostering a culture of inclusivity and acceptance. Carolyn’s efforts have positively influenced both the younger generation and the aging community, ensuring a brighter future for Tempe.
Carolyn, the Director of FSL’s Adult Day Health Center Tempe, has not only made a significant and positive impact on the Tempe community but has also set an exemplary standard for leadership, compassion, and commitment. Her dedication to inclusivity, coupled with her ability to inspire others, makes her a true gem in the Tempe community. Her story is a testament to the power of one individual’s efforts to create lasting change.
