FSL’s Food Pantries More Important now Than Ever

The Vital Impact of Food Pantries

For most people, it’s hard to make it through the day without being reminded of the stressful reality of inflation. From gas prices to utility bills to rent, rising prices are showing up in nearly every area of our lives. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the grocery store, where food prices are increasing sharply. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the food at home price index rose by 10% between May 2021 and May 2022—the biggest jump in over thirty years.

The populations who will suffer the most are those already at risk of food insecurity, including low-income groups, Black and Hispanic households, and in some cases, seniors. In Arizona, for example, the prevalence of food insecurity among individuals aged 60 and over was 14.5% for 2018-2019. Often, seniors face the compounded disadvantages of low income, disability, and lack of access to transportation.

Doing Our Part

As a result, many people are turning to food banks to ensure they have enough food to get by. At FSL, we’re stepping up to address the growing need for food by providing nutritious meals for over 1,100 Arizonans each day through our Food Pantries, Home-Delivered Meal programs, and Congregate Meals.

  • About FSL’s Food Pantries

FSL operates three food pantry locations in Peoria and Wickenburg. The pantries serve community members who live below the poverty line. Thanks to generous donations and support from other community organizations, our food pantries were able to distribute over 87,500 pounds of food last year.

  • About FSL’s Home-Delivered Meals

Many of FSL’s clients face mobility or transportation barriers that make it difficult to shop for groceries, cook, or travel to take advantage of FSL’s congregate meals. For individuals in this situation, FSL delivers nutritious meals straight to their doorstep. Last year, we delivered over 19,000 meals to individuals who needed them most.

  • About FSL’s Congregate Meals

Each day, clients at FSL’s Wickenburg and Peoria Senior Centers and all three ReCreación locations receive hot, healthy meals while enjoying the company of fellow attendees. For many, the benefits of congregate meals are twofold: in addition to access to food they might not otherwise have, participants can connect socially with other people. In 2021, our congregate meals program served nearly 13,700 lunches to clients.
