FSL’s Food Pantry & Meal Delivery Services

Our Food Pantry & Meal Delivery Services

March is National Nutrition Month. It’s a good time for people to focus on the food in their lives and how it’s meeting their needs—but it’s also a necessary time to remember the people who don’t have access to food or whose choices are limited by their circumstances. Over 900,000 people (or 1 out of every 8 individuals) struggle with hunger in Arizona alone.

FSL Is Fighting Back Against Food Poverty

Many of the people FSL serves, including seniors and people with disabilities, are in danger of hunger. Or, if they do have regular access to food, they may not be receiving adequate nutrition due to financial constraints or being unable to cook for themselves. To address this need, FSL provides food services in the form of food pantries and home-delivered meals to the people who need them most. Here’s a summary of the impact our work is making in the community:

  • Three food pantries provide 375,000 pounds of food to families in need
  • Nearly 800 meals are served or delivered to Arizonans each day
  • Over 200 clients can live healthier, more independent lives because of our home-delivered meals

In total, 1,400 meals are provided each day through our Food Pantries and Home-Delivered and Congregate Meal Programs.

Ruby Steck, A Volunteer's Perspective

Ruby Steck has attended programs and volunteered at FSL’s Wickenburg Senior Center for 16 years. In that time, she’s witnessed firsthand the difference that FSL has been able to make for people in need. “A lot of people don’t realize how many services FSL has to offer,” she noted. “…I know that I can wake up and come here and be in a safe place, [have] a safe meal for $3.50, and you know that’s so important. We all have bumps in the road, but people here know they still get to eat, no matter their situation.”

Ruby’s not the only one. She related the story of another woman she knew whose financial situation was so tenuous that she couldn’t afford to buy any food other than rice and beans. “I was able to share her circumstances with FSL, and she was taken care of immediately,” Ruby recalls. “Everything was handled quickly and discreetly. Now she’s getting to a better point in her life, and she is getting better nutrition.”

Ruby believes that FSL’s food pantries and home-delivered meals are among the most valuable things FSL has to offer. She feels it’s essential for people to know that “there is nutrition and food available. The fact that you can get a hot meal no matter what is going on in your life, and be safe, is so important.”
