FSL’s Home Improvements Program boosted by DOE

Community Organizations and State Agencies Will Help American Families Make Homes Energy-Efficient and Save Money:

On July 8th, The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded over $40 million to 21 organizations and five state agencies to help American families across the country. The funds will make their homes more energy efficient and lower their utility costs. FSL Home Improvements Healthy Homes Initiative is one of the programs that will benefit from this award

FSL is Arizona’s largest provider of weatherization assistance (WAP). They’ve been providing home improvements to under-resourced homeowners, particularly seniors, for decades. With this new influx of funds, FSL will now be able to help even more in and around Phoenix. Last year, the program provided home improvements to over 1000 households, valued at just over 10 million dollars. During times like these, every penny counts, especially for those living at or below the poverty line.

“Weatherization is a great way to save hundreds of dollars on energy bills. Unfortunately, aging electrical systems and structural complications keep homes in disrepair, locked out of this money-saving benefit,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “Today’s funding from the DOE doubles down on the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s $3.5 billion investment in weatherization assistance by getting homes weatherization ready.”

How New Funds Will Help the Valley:

FSL will work alongside its contracted partner, Maricopa County, and will also partner with Mercy Care, to survey each home for its unique weatherization needs. This will include ensuring that the home is safe for its residents by removing any health and safety hazards. Furthermore, FSL and Mercy Care will then conduct a post-survey once the work is complete to confirm that all repairs were done adequately and efficiently.

With its team of experienced contractors and with their near half-century of experience in human advocacy, FSL is excited to begin this new chapter of our legacy. These new funds will reduce the risk of health and safety hazards in the home for our vulnerable senior population. It will also provide many across Arizona with money-saving improvements to their home. Typically, home repair costs can run up into the thousands of dollars range and is a primary cause of stress for everyone, not just seniors. Additionally, when you add in the necessary accommodations that certain homes need to house some of our most vulnerable clients, the task becomes almost overwhelming for some.

We believe that with these new improvements to our already impressive program, FSL will be able to make lives across the Valley more physically and mentally healthy.
