Freshly prepared, ready to eat meals delivered right to your doorstep is more common than many people think. In 2018, FSL delivered nearly 8,000 home delivered meals to residents within the Peoria area. Residents who receive home-delivered meals can receive two meals (breakfast and lunch) anywhere from 2-5 days a week, depending on their living situation and food preferences. Monthly calendars that list the meals of each day are also provided in advance, allowing residents to pick and choose the days they would like the meals delivered to them. For some residents, like Theresa, their health does not allow them to leave their homes as often as most. Being able to have their breakfast and lunch delivered right to their door is the solution they never knew they needed.
Over the last couple of years Theresa, 88 years old, began noticing a decline in her health – gradually then all at once. While she is still able to manage her everyday routine, anything outside of it has become merely impossible. With doctor visits throughout the week and having to rely on others for transportation, living alone has been her biggest struggle yet. She has been home bound for a few years and is no longer able to drive herself around. Thankfully, she does have an on-call caregiver who helps around the house, cleans, helps her manage her medications, and provides any additional help that is needed. While having her caregiver helps out drastically, having to schedule visits when unexpected emergencies occur can be a struggle itself.
Theresa first learned about the meals program through some of her friends and neighbors who also receive them regularly. Though donations are not required, Theresa prides herself in giving back to the beneficial program that has done so much for her. She has been receiving meals for going on two years and loves the diversity of foods. While she has had her fair share of different combinations, her favorite is the stuffed cabbage, mashed potatoes, and corn. Her meals are always consumed with her favorite beverage, Coca-Cola – although she knows how unhealthy it is. “If you like it eat it, if not, eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.” Overwhelmed with thankfulness to have found this service, Theresa feels like a weight has been lifted off of her shoulder ever since. “Having one less task to rely on someone for has been a blessing. My caregiver does more than enough for me already, I hate to be a burden.”
