Home for the Holidays through FSL

Welcome Clayton Home for Good

After years of battling chronic heart conditions and rising rents, Clayton fell into street homelessness. He had worked 30 years as a diesel mechanic; he loved his job, but it was hard on his body. All those years of service were not enough to keep Clayton from becoming homeless just a few years later.

After years of living with his chronic conditions and undergoing a divorce, Clayton was forced to sell his home and began renting apartments.

Before long, rising rent prices quickly ate away at his fixed income and savings. On top of that, his failing health and medical bills were overwhelmingly burdensome. Clayton faced the unimaginable situation of choosing between his health, a safe home, or dinner on the table.

An Unimaginable Decision

In a matter of months, Clayton found himself homeless and deathly ill. He worried that there was nowhere to turn until he found a group of Arizona non-profits dedicated to offering him a helping hand. His hope was reinstated through the various homeless agencies in Arizona, who gave him a safe place to rest, a warm meal, and a case worker to help him establish tangible long-term goals.

Clayton wasn’t in the homeless shelter for long before he was ready to take the trajectory of his life into his own hands. Soon, he was looking for a more permanent, personalized solution  which he found at our affordable housing community, Acacia Heights.

"I'd probably be dead without this apartment."

For us, a safe, decent, affordable place to live is fundamental to our mission and vital for the families and individuals of all ages that we serve. At Acacia Heights, Clayton pays affordable rent in line with his income, and his apartment is his for as long as he needs it.

Acacia Heights is just one of 25 multi-family affordable housing communities that we own and operate in Arizona.

Clayton says having a home in Acacia Heights has made a massive difference in his life. His health is improving because he can walk safely near his apartment. He also feels connected to his neighbors, who look out for each other and pitch in where needed.

“We all work together here.”

That’s given Clayton a much-needed sense of peace and connection to his neighbors. Every month the residents have potlucks, which contributes to battling apathy amongst the seniors who live at Acacia Heights. Clayton found more than just a home at Acacia Heights; he found new friends and family.
