While summer means warmer weather, days at the beach, and outdoor adventures, the hotter temps also put you and your loved ones at risk of dehydration. The condition affects people of all ages, including senior members of your family.

Dehydration in Seniors

Seniors are at a higher risk of getting dehydrated, and those with dementia are about six times as likely to suffer from dehydration. Aging comes with a decline in one’s health and senses. For some, they lose their sense of thirst. Because many seniors deal with isolation or tend to be forgetful, they are likely to experience dehydration. In addition, a lot of seniors have incontinence problems so they may refuse to drink water, which can compound the problem. Some may be on medications that can cause dehydration that much faster.

Poor hydration in elderly people can lead to minor to severe dehydration which may include, dizziness, loss of consciousness, and even death. Also, while water helps regular body functions, seniors may have a harder time, as their systems may no longer function correctly, which can make dehydration happen. If you can’t stay with your loved one or look after them, you might want to consider the option of hiring home care services. Having someone look after your loved ones will reduce the chances of dehydration from happening.

Hydration Tips to Remember

Dehydration is preventable. There are plenty of ways to make sure your loved one stays safe this summer.

  • Give your senior loved ones reusable water bottles. Remind them to carry the bottle with them at all times. Another option includes to talk to their caregiver and remind them to make sure your loved ones stay hydrated.
  • Let them drink coconut water. Coconut water has anti-inflammatory properties and are full of amino acids as well as antioxidants.
  • Keep them cool. Take to their caregivers to make sure the home is kept under cool temperatures to keep your parents or grandparents from getting dehydrated from too much heat.
