National Nutrition Month: Why Nutrition Matters

Why Nutrition Matters

March is National Nutrition Month, a campaign designed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to encourage everyone to learn about the impact of nutrition on our lives and develop healthful eating and physical activity habits.

However, for some people, focusing on nutrition isn’t as simple as just making different choices in the grocery store or bypassing the donuts provided at a work meeting. Seniors, people with disabilities, and individuals with severe mental illness often experience barriers that make them unable to shop or cook for themselves. As a result, these groups are often dependent on caregivers for their nutrition needs or rely on readily-available, low-nutrient foods if they live alone.

FSL Provides Nutrition to Those Who Need It Most

In recognition of the challenges that many of our members face in meeting their nutrition needs, FSL provides meal services through ReCreación, our adult day care centers, and our Peoria and Wickenburg senior centers. Our meal services (which include a morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack) meet the standards set out by the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

In addition, because our meals are designed by registered dietitians and catered through St. Joseph’s Hospital, we can accommodate special dietary needs, including clients who require diabetic- or renal-friendly foods or a mechanical soft diet (to name just a few examples). Clients also have the option of choosing between hot and cold lunch selections.

More Than Just a Meal

The impacts of FSL’s meal programs are felt far beyond the time that our clients spend eating with us. By providing reliable access to nutritious foods that many clients would not otherwise have, our meal programs improve the overall quality of life for the individuals we serve by allowing them to maintain their health and independence.

FSL’s mealtimes also provide opportunities for clients to socialize with staff and one another. For many, the community that FSL provides keeps them from becoming isolated, which can have serious consequences for mental and physical health.

Finally, FSL’s meal programs are a source of much-needed support for the caregivers and loved ones of clients, many of whom are juggling jobs or other demands on their time. Each day their loved ones spend at FSL is a day that their caregivers don’t have to worry about preparing meals in advance, thereby reducing their caregiver burden.
