Safe Living Options for People With Serious Mental Illness
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) divides mental illness into two categories: Any Mental Illness (AMI) and Serious Mental Illness (SMI). The former category refers to all mental, behavioral, and emotional disorders, including those that have mild to no impact on the lives of the individuals affected.
By contrast, Serious Mental Illness is defined as “a mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder resulting in serious functional impairment, which substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities.” Serious mental illness typically includes (but is not limited to) conditions such as schizophrenia, severe bipolar disorder, and severe major depressive disorder.
As of 2020, the NIMH estimated that around 5.6% of adults in the US (or 14.2 million individuals) suffer from SMI. In Arizona alone, approximately 257,000 adults live with a serious mental illness.
Living With SMI
The symptoms and effects of SMI are different for everyone; however, individuals with SMI often struggle with activities of daily living, including maintaining stable housing, employment, and self-care. As a result, some of them are unable to live independently, and may require long-term caregiver assistance or supportive treatment.
For people in this situation, supported housing or group homes like FSL’s Assisted Group Living (AGL) Program can be (literally) lifesaving. FSL’s AGL facilities aim to provide top-quality mental health care while also allowing clients to lead happy, safe, and fulfilling lives. Our services include:
- Structured, coordinated, and therapeutic activities
- Behavioral health management and counseling
- Personal care services
- Medication assistance
- On-call clinical teams and nursing oversight
- Psychosocial rehabilitation
As of April 2022, our AGL facilities are home to 83 residents, each of whom receive support appropriate for their individual situation. This tailored, holistic approach allows residents to live as independently as possible while still having their care needs met.
If you or a loved one is struggling with the effects of a serious mental illness, we can help. FSL’s Assisted Group Living program currently has two spots open. Contact us today for more information on our services and how to enroll!
