About 34.2 million Americans have provided unpaid care to an adult age 50 or older in the last 12 months. February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day and we thought there’s no better time to celebrate the caregiver in your life. Whether your caregiver is a family member, friend or a professional, they are providing valuable services and care to your loved one.
Below are 5 simple ways to thank your caregiver:
1. Publicly recognize them. Whether it’s at a family gathering or a simple as including them in your daily prayers or discussions at the dinner table, mention their name and let the family know how grateful you are for their help. If you have enlisted the help of a professional caregiver, contact their supervisor and let them know how much you appreciate them.
2. Send a small gift. Maybe it’s a fresh flower from your garden or local store, or a gift card to their favorite coffee shop, a small gift that is thoughtful can go a long way and brighten someone’s day.
3. Give them a card. A heartwarming card or email is an excellent way to tell a caregiver how much you appreciate them. It’s a simple and powerful way to express your feelings. More than the card itself, the note written inside will make the day special and memorable.
4. Offer them a day off. Whether they are a family member or paid caregiver, offer to give them a day off. Don’t take no for an answer, tell them it’s your way of saying thank you for all their hard work and you want them to enjoy a personal day. Caregivers need a break too!
5. Take some time and make a craft with your loved one to give to your caregiver. A hand-made craft coming for the both of you will become a treasured item for years to come, and can provide a great bonding experience for you and your loved one.
