This Fourth of July, we’d like to highlight a Veteran who is close to our hearts at FSL – Scott Strey.
Scott’s story begins with the sacrifice he made for all of us when he dedicated his life to serving in the United States Navy for 20 years, protecting our freedom and independence. Last year, Scott came to us in need of assistance to make the home he loves more accessible to him and his wheelchair. We felt honored to be able to provide some home modifications to give him back his independence!
“I’m 68, and I never had to rely on anybody until I moved into this house. I love the house, but I couldn’t do anything,” Scott explains. “Then, FSL came in and said, ‘yep, we can help you!”
FSL’s Home Improvements team, led by Katie Martin, had the opportunity to meet with Scott and discuss his needs for his home. Katie explains that when tackling a project of this magnitude, “it’s best to prioritize the work with the needs of the client. What are their needs in the home; where are they having trouble accessibility-wise.”
The team, together with Scott, decided that the house would need quite a bit of work completed in order to make it a safe home. In fact, they’d have to perform some work throughout the house, including in the kitchen, the bedroom, and the bathroom. Some of the renovations included: installing new floors, lowering the kitchen counters, removing a kitchen island and moving the appliances to be in better reach, installing a walk-in shower in the bathroom, lowering medicine cabinets, installing a wheelchair accessible sink and grab bars for safety. The bedroom door was also widened to allow for a wheelchair to pass through with ease. With all of these renovations completed, Scott was able to once again cook his own meals (an activity he truly enjoys), safely maneuver throughout his house and remain in the home he loves without having to rely on others for assistance. This gave Scott the independence and dignity he deserves!
“Now I can get around; I’m more independent! I don’t have to rely on anybody to do anything, which I like,” laughs Scott.
We strive to enhance the independence of our clients, allowing them to stay in the homes and communities that they love. We work diligently to design programs that will give Arizonans an alternative to moving into a facility. We advocate for their dignity, their health and their wellbeing. Scott’s story highlights the values that we, as a company, hope to display.
