Caring for aging parents or ailing relatives is one of the most challenging and rewarding jobs. So often, the position is unrecognized and unappreciated. September is National Self-Care Awareness Month, and FSL would like to remind caregivers to take care of themselves.

Self-care is often neglected, but it is an important part of caregiving. FSL continues to raise public awareness regarding the importance of self-care through caregiving education and resources.

The Life of a Caregiver

At FSL, we know first-hand all that goes into caregiving and appreciate caregivers for all they do. If you or a loved one has a caregiver, we ask you to reach out, show your gratitude, and encourage them to care for themselves as well.

Self-Care Tips for Caregivers

  • Do not skip meals. Make time to eat three square meals a day.
  • Create a healthy sleep schedule.
  • Incorporate exercise into your lifestyle, even if it’s just 20 minutes day.
  • Include breaks into your caregiving schedule.
  • Recognize when you’re having difficulty managing stress.

Caregiving Resources

Making the decision to seek caregiving for a loved one can feel overwhelming, and we want to remind you of caregiving education and resources available, visit FSL’s Empowering Family Caregivers to learn more about our Educational Series.

Home Care

Self-care begins at your place of comfort, your home. Since we spend most of our down time in our homes, it becomes a reflection of ourselves and how we value different environments around us when we are not there. At FSL, we offer top quality Home Care through an array of services tailored to meet your needs. Some of our services include: housekeeping, miscellaneous chores, prescription reminders, respite care for caregivers and companionship for you. If you or someone you know can benefit from FSL’s Home Care Services please call (602) 285-1800.

Adult Day Health Services (ADHS)

As a caregiver, you might find yourself having a hard time balancing your personal/work life and your caregiving life (yes, there is a difference). Being able to find balance between the multiple hats you wear everyday is a key factor in your overall health. FSL operates three Adult Day Health Service centers across the Phoenix metropolitan area: Glendale, Phoenix and Tempe. Each location provides various activities, socialization and assistance throughout the day. All participants are given quality medical care, and opportunities for therapeutic recreation and meaningful social interaction. Visit FSL’s Adult Day Health Services to inquire more information.
